SUBJECT: Weekly Update
As I write this week’s memo, we are starting to see a noticeable increase in passenger volume at all of our airports which is good news and an indicator of an anticipated busy summer travel season as more people across the country receive vaccinations for COVID-19.
Welcome back to Carmen Rios and Cynthia Garcia after extended illnesses. We wish Jennifer Coto all the best in her new position at the Newark FAMS office. Jennifer transferred to get closer to home in New Jersey. Welcome to Sofia Hatzidakis who joins our Mission Support team from the Newark FAMS office. This will also get Sofia closer to home and we look forward to working with Sofia. I also want to wish HPN Manager Jose Espreo a speedy and full recovery and return to the team at HPN soon.
We received good news for our first shift officers at LGA. The MTA will return to full 24-hour daily service effective Monday, May 17. We will now have all of our first shift officers at the opening of our checkpoints at 0330 or 0400 depending on the terminal.
On an unfortunate note, former LGA STSO and Manager, Ishmael Scott died this week. TSM Scott served the TSA at LGA from October 2003 to January 2013. TSM Scott began his career as an STSO and promoted to TSM in 2010. Condolences to TSM Scott’s family and friends.
We have a new class of officers at LGA. They graduated from FLETC this afternoon. They will complete their local training and we will hold their graduation ceremony next Wednesday morning. They report for duty at the checkpoints Thursday. Please welcome them to the TSA and teach them well and hold them to high standards so they are set up for success.
Please take the time during your work day to get on a computer and complete the Leadership for Engagement Survey that all of you received in your e-mail in April. There are two weeks left to complete the survey. By completing the survey and rating the three levels of leadership above your position, we can identify what we are doing well and continue on that path. We can also identify what we are not doing well, and target those areas for improvement. This survey is a great opportunity to have influence on your leadership. Thank you all for taking the survey and helping to drive improvement.
I also want to take this opportunity to continue to encourage all of you who have not received a COVID-19 vaccination to seriously consider doing so. Effective April 26, everyone who has received two vaccinations of Moderna or Pfizer, or one vaccination of Johnson & Johnson, do not have to wear a face shield. Remember, it is not just about you, but also protecting family and friends from contracting COVID-19. Thank you for your consideration.
We have some additional ETD and BLS units coming to Terminal B. We also made a request for a CAT unit for our SWF checkpoint. A CAT unit will be sent to SWF in July.
The past two weeks I had the good fortune to spend some time with the leadership teams on first and seconds shifts at SWF to conduct leadership training. We discussed the tenets of good leadership and how they are applicable to our everyday activities. We also discussed the importance of core values. The three we discussed, and I have mentioned these before in previous weekly update memos, are:
1. Do the right thing. Doing what is inherently right generates trust with your co-workers, your superiors and subordinates. It also earns the trust of the traveling public and stakeholders we have sworn to protect. As the former Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz says: “There is no right time to do the wrong thing and there is no wrong time to do what is right”.
2. Do everything to the best of your ability. Always remember that others, your co-workers, stakeholders and the traveling public are depending on you to do your best. They are placing their lives in our hands and we will not fail them.
3. Care about each other. Care is the basis for trust. Without trust, there can be no relationship between people. If there is no relationship between people, there can be no team. Be good teammates and care about each other.
Thank you all for your continued dedication to the TSA mission and for your devotion to duty and service to the Nation. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers on Sunday and enjoy your special day!
Respectfully,
Bob Duffy
