As per subdivision 3 of section 1229-c of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law as of November 1st 2020 is amended to require that back seat passengers in a motor vehicle who are sixteen years of age or older be restrained by a safety belt. Front seat passengers and persons sixteen years or younger are already required by existing laws.
A citation for a violation of this law can be issued to the passenger. The maximum fine for a conviction is $50.00 plus applicable surcharge(s).
All persons in a government vehicle are to adhere to this law including those utilizing shuttle or utility vans.
